Hi mums

I've just taken my son for his vaccines and he was given an oral one for the rotavirus. I told the nurse I was worried about this one but she went on to give him it anyway

If your baby had the vaccine, did he/she have a reaction? Any diarrrhea or sickness from it? Did anyone else catch it? Can it be passed on through saliva (may baby is a dribbler and thumb sucker and I'm worried about kissing his face or hands etc.)?

I'm panicking because I have a huge phobia of catching a stomach bug but I sort of know in a way it's better to vaccinate him against it with a weakened version than him catch it and get the full blown thing. I literally cried when we left the doctors, feel so guilty that I may have let them give him the rotavirus.

Thanks x

Hi Rachel,

Try not to worry hon, as with most vaccines LO may have a raised temp but should mostly be fine.

The vaccine only contains a very small weakened version of the virus so it won't cause anyone to catch the virus. It will just mean antibodies are produced to fight the virus if caught in the future.  Don't worry about it. My dd had it with no side effects.
She was given calpol afterwards on advice from the nurse but that was for the effects of the other jabs.

My ds1 had rota virus when he was 2. It was very severe and he was in hospital for over a week with it. He was so dehydrated (he even threw up water) they couldn't get a vain to get fluids into him and ended up with the drip in his foot!!

I made sure ds2 had the vaccine as it was the worst week of our lives!!

Hi Rachel - aw please don't worry. Our LO had the oral vaccine twice and was completely fine and so were we - the nurse mentioned taking  extra care with hand washing after a nappy change, that's all. You did the right thing for your LO - hope Jo's experience of how poorly her LO was with the virus helps you feel better about giving the vaccine.

My daughter had it last week. She was very off colour for about 4 days and she had some sickness and dirohhea . I just made sure I washed my hands after every nappy change and before every feed to avoid it from spreading or it becoming worse.

Your immune system should be strong enough to fight off the "bug" before you would even know you had it.

I think it's just luck of the draw whether they get any side effects of the immunisations. X

Ds was fine when he had the rotavirus. Slight temperature but that was it.

Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately my little baby boy has now had diarrhoea for 9 days now and it's not getting any better I've spoken to the doctor who said wait until next week and then if it's still bad then go to the docs. I can't believe a weakened virus can have such an effect. I feel awful for him - it just doesn't seem to be getting any better!

Don't know what to do about the next round of vaccinations. I don't want him going through this again. Was thinking about asking for the injections separate to the rotavirus oral vaccine so that he has chance to fight them off separately. Poor little man x

Rachel A, hope your baby got better quickly and is well now!

My baby developed signs of tummy pains after her 12 week immunisations, pretty sure it's the rotovirus.  She's Not slept at night for 4 nights, just wriggles and squeals with pain. She's just as uncomfortable all day. No end in sight!

How long did your baby take to recover?

Am definitely reporting as a side effect.

Mine had this recently, we noticed a few more poos than usual and a little bit greener than normal but he seemed fine in himself.

This is rather old now but how long did it last?? Mine is going through the same thing, feedings are so unsettled because he is so uncomfortable. I can hear his little tummy gurgling. It’s awful
