Please can any one help. My daughter who is nearly 6 is constantly pulling up her underwear – it started last year when she wore tights to school she would always be pulling them up as they felt funny (which I kind of understood as I hate wearing tights as they do seem to keep falling down a bit and ending up with the crotch at your knees). I hoped that with the change in weather she would stop when she stopped wearing tights – but no instead she pulls at her knickers, even lifting up her dress to pull at them. I have tried putting her in legging and or trousers and we have the same problem. We have tried so many types of knickers in different shapes and sizes and materials I could open a shop for children’s knickers! I have asked her why she does it – she says they just aren’t comfy. We have tried ignoring her – no difference, we have tried reminding her not to using a key word – wriggle! No improvement . We have had her checked at the doctor and she has no infections etc – so no need to keep itching or anything similar – not that it is itching)  I am at my wits end as to what to do – so many people comment on her constantly doing it and I am worried the children at school will soon pick up on it and start teasing her about it.  Any ideas would be welcome

I know how you feel. My daughter 8 now, used to when she was younger be completely unaware of when her underwear was showing. School dresses and any other types of dresses or skirts were a nightmare. For a while i dealt with it but just giving her tights/leggings whenever possible. But then it had to come down to constantly reminding her when needed. She slowly did outgrow this. And so will your daughter.

I did the same when I was little. I hated the sensation of pants that fell below the belly button and tights above the belly button. It really irritated me. Either try buying higher pants so they are slightly higher than the tights or just forget the tights and put her in knee socks. My mum gave up with tights in the end and put me in knee socks.

Hi sorry this is so long after your post but just wondering how long this took to resolve? My 5 year old son is also doing this constantly! Started a few weeks ago I think because he's had a growth spurt but he's in the right size clothes and we've tried all sorts of underwear and tactics but it seems to stress him out so trying ignoring now! It's very frustrating to watch! Any tips welcome! Worried it will start impacting on school etc

Hello Karen,

My daughter does the same thing, especially when talking, I have put it down to a habit as she said initially that she doesn't like it clothes (especially underwear) below her belly button.

We too have tried different types of knickers and still does it with her trousers lol.

My daughter also has other "issues" which I think are all related (we have a paed app in April) for possible sensory/anxiety concerns.

She is sensitivity to certain loud/sudden noises, does not like being in the room on her own most of the time, we constantly need to play/interact, stutters to name a few.

Hope this helps somehow.

Thanks for replying! It's started to calm down now, he still does it especially in his school uniform but it's a lot less than it was so think it was a habit/getting used to his school uniform. I hope the appointment next month goes okay. Best of luck, they are a worry aren't they! X
