The title says it all really, but my 7 month old DD has never cried with tears.  When's she's upset she screams and the like, but there literally has never been a tear.  Her eye's seem fine, they're not red, inflamed or anything else, and she's a very happy little girl....but I'm going out of my mind worrying!  I have a doctors appointment at the end of next week, but am worried it's something nasty....

Any thoughts? When did your babies start crying?

Thanks

sorry to hear your worries. My DD shed tears when she was a few days old. Its not everytime she cries tho, just when she's really upset.
Maybe your DD is yet to get really upset or maybe she's a lil toughy
Try not to worry, I'm sure she'll be fine.

My baby started crying real tears at her 8 week jabs, at 7 months, if you've never seen any tears, then you're right to take her to the doctor but I wouldn't worry too much - it's far more likely to be blocked tear ducts if anything, which are very easy to treat, and actually pretty common, too.

I don't think the tear duct's mature until a bit older, possibly it's natures way of making sure that babies don't get dehydrated whilst they are in the 'crying' period.
A friends baby DID cry tears from a very young age, and became quite poorly through dehydration when he suffered  from 'D and V'..her doctoer was very suprised that he was crying tears at this point, he was probably between 6-8 months at the time.
It may be worth asking your midwife or even GOOGLE-ing it to put your mind at ease..

my Lo 8 months cries with tears, i disagree with pp, that completely normal(he's ds3) however its only if he's really upset like he's now crawling everywhere and has had a few little knocks or if he has to wait too long for what he wants he tends to work himself up! he does have a blocked tear duct and my friend who is an eye dr explained this is actually not what i thought, the tear duct actually takes the moisture away like a drain not produce the tears.
my guess is you have a happy contented baby

I wouldn't worry too much the GP will let you know, but I don't think mine cried with tears until a lot older - about 2 or 3 and even then very rarely only if they've got themselves worked up because I'm holding my ground on something. If the eyes aren't red or sore then it's unlikely they are infected or anything. I remember when my eldest was a baby he never blinked -literal never blinked to the point that we would have staring competitions with him, we always lost, it was very strange he just seem so intent on seeing everything.

My boy is 5 and he has never shed a tear, if he hurts himself he whines or has a moan, one of my friends said her boy was 7 before he shed a tear.

Try not worry too much, I'm glad you have made a doc appointment, it might be something simple like blocked tear ducts or something, there is so much doc can do these days to help when there is a problem. I would say I should think tears would have been able to be shed by now but I cannot remember when my boys first cryer with tears. They are now 3 and 4 years old hard to remember that far back! Obviously your concerned but taking her to see a doc really is the best thing. Hope all is well.

I was really worried about my lil boy - exactly the same as your lil one - all the crying screaming but no tears. I took him to the doc and they said that tear ducts sometimes take a while to develop - and to take him back after 3 months. It turns out that everything was fine - he didn't start tears until he was about a year old ( I think!) - I was really paranoid about it - and then a bit upset when a real tear did appear! You can't win!;)

Thanks guys for the reassuring words ...I know I'm probably worrying prematurely but if you consult Dr. Google you end up with some pretty scary stuff...

Hi Bally

As you have noticed, this is an old thread that hasn't been updated for a long time.

I would highly recommend that you post in our baby and child board within our Drop-in Clinic so one of our Health Visitors can try to help you.
