Hi everyone,

I am writing this post to share my experience and seek advice on how to handle a difficult situation at work. I am 8 weeks pregnant and the only woman in my team. My manager’s tone has always been intimidating but I put up with it because I didn’t want it to affect my career. This week we were supposed to go to the office and I couldn’t go because of severe morning sickness and had to let him know the reason. My nausea is very bad, I even was diagnosed with dehydration in the hospital and lost weight. However, I am pushing through it and not taking any sick leaves as we have heavy workload these days. I thought he would be appreciative of this and more understanding since I told him about my pregnancy and sickness and will watch his usual intimidating tone. However nothing has changed. Despite me pushing though this and doing all my work, he makes very unpleasant remarks. For example, today I asked a colleague to double check a report he has done last month as it seemed to me there was an error in that report. Then my manager told me literally “Can I ask you not to ask other people to do your job?”. Apparently I was supposed to check what was wrong with my colleague’s report on top of the work I am doing at the moment with my own reports. I don’t mind him asking me that, but the tone… This made me burst into tears after we finished our call and I have been crying whole evening since. I am worried this stress can affect me and my baby. I tried to talk to him about his tone couple of times before and every time he apologises, promises to watch his tone, but nothing changes. I am hoping to hear from other women who have gone through similar situations or have any advice on how to handle this situation.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I appreciate any advice or support you can offer.

Hi Heidi,

I'm Emma, one of the Parent Supporters here at Netmums. Sending you gentle hugs this morning, I can hear your work environment is causing you stress and you are right, your physical and mental health is priority, especially when pregnant. You mentioned you have spoke to your manager about his tone previously which is positive that you are able to speak comfortably with him about this but nothing seems to be changing on his end.

Have you ever raised your concerns with your HR department Heidi? Even just logging the behaviours so there is evidence if it goes any further.

I will link a useful site 'Maternity Action' which details your rights and legal info during your pregnancy and maternity leave if you find this useful Heidi. Know your rights - Maternity Action

In the meantime, ensure you are doing all the lovely things which bring you peace and calm during this time, bubble baths, peaceful walks, a nice rest, whatever makes you feel good Heidi.

I know some of our other lovely community members will be able to relate with your story so hopefully they will be along shortly to share their own experiences too.

Take care,

Emma

Hi Heidi,

We've moved your thread to our maternal mental health board, as we think it's a more appropriate place for this topic and you’re more likely to get responses here.
