My mum tells me that when I was a baby she would wrap me up and leave me outside in the back of the house for my naps-year round. She reckons it's good for babies and toughens them up.

What do you think-good idea, we are too soft on babies? Or is it dangerous?

I recently saw that they do that in Norway. But it’s the culture there so slightly different personally I would not risk it. U less I was sat there with her pram. We are just living in times where that might not be safe.

My mother said a similar thing to me. Apparently I wasn’t a night sleeper & she needed sleep as I was the youngest of 6! My dad would wrap me up in a blanket & rock me to sleep on the swing in our garden.

I know things are a lot different these days, I wouldn’t be happy to do it in the winter as I’m sure babies don’t retain/regulate warmth in their little bodies. But tbh would I do it in the summer? Only if I was sat in my own garden & with my baby the whole time. You wouldn’t buy a diamond ring & let someone else wear it would you? Surely babies are more precious than that.

My baby was stung by a bee whilst I was there so I definitely would never leave them outside alone.

Personally wouldn't risk it. They need to be where you can see them in real life or on monitor

I did this with my youngests. Its good for their health and really helps their sleep patterns.

How on earth would it be dangerous?

Lol... you just put the monitor outside. I put mine outside for day time sleeps from a few weeks old and clipped a video monitor on the handle bars to watch her.

You shouldn't leave the baby unattended outside in the pram, if you're going to be there it's fine. It's definitely the culture in much colder countries than ours, the main reason it isn't as popular here is because of the weather! The amount it rains makes it difficult and there is the factor of baby's sleeping environment and the argument that napping in cots is better for them.

This would only really work in a bassinet though so only for the first few months. They shouldn't be napping sitting up as a regular, planned occurance.

So you think our weather is worse than Denmark? Pmsl. And the reason we dont is purely down to culture. People in uk think the worse will happen and that people are posed at the garden gate ready to pounce if you put them in the garden. Theres no difference between putting them outside in a pram or upstairs in a cot. Apart from them breathing fresh air outside. And you do realise that pushchair seats go down so they don't actually sleep sitting up, right?

Yes we left my little boy outside sleeping. Wrapped up nice and warm. He'd be sleeping next to us while we worked the allotment, or we'd leave him outside the back door if he fell asleep whilst we'd been out. Nice bit of fresh air, he slept well. We were always in earshot, and our back garden is very secure.

And this is recent, he's only 4 now.

In a secure area and checked regularly , yeah !

Scandanavia do it and it’s colder there - they also have their babies sleep in

boxes I think rather than cots !

Why do you assume the baby/toddler would be sitting up? Lying in a pram wrapped up warmly asleep a baby is fine to sleep outside.

Not in a car seat obviously.

All of our children napped outside in a secure garden, within earshot and with a cat net to keep out unwanted cats.

It rains more here than it does in Denmark, which is what I referred to specifically.

Someone commented saying they leave their baby out in the front! Babies shouldn't sleep away from their parents for the first 6 months anyway but yes, if they are outside they should be supervised. There are risks to them being outside unsupervised, yes one of those is obviously being taken which depending where you live isn't high but there are other external risks - I have a friend whose child got stung by a bee and turned out to be highly allergic, what if mum wasn't with the baby then and this happened? I know someone else whose cat tried to sit on their baby whilst they were sleeping.

I was merely pointing out that baby shouldn't be left unsupervised and it's potentially not as practical in the UK as other countries, there's no need to be rude.

I wouldn't leave my baby reclined in an easier to access stroller (cos it's closer to the ground) outside.

Yes, there are more risks outside this is why I was saying they need to be supervised. Poster is probably at least 25, the world has changed and unfortunately it's even unsafer for kids.

I know a child was the victim of being attempted to be grabbed over the festive period, I'll be keeping my child supervised even in the garden there are some awful people out there.
