My son 14 now , single mum for 14 years , no family or friends support really.

He Sen child

Little bit about us

I had him at 37 week but he was 1lb 2 Oz he had heart surgery at 5 months I got him home at 9 month on love support machine etc . He was rush in at 10 months having massive 2 hour fits . Was told he was epileptic.

I was on mat leave work full time before I had him.

When I got him home I was ment to take go back when he was 12 months but I didn't get him home till he was 13 months . Work allowed me to use my holiday what I had and I had some sick pay as I was physically drain.

When I had to go back I got him in a good nursery 15 months he wasn't walking crawling he was like a new born.

When he finished nursery at 4 he go 7 till 6 5 days .

He had one to one support , he got low dla back then . Time went on he started to walk fully at 4.5 years and he stop wearing nappies . School didn't apply for his one to one every term the was ment to new mum to all this didn't no and he didn't talk so he not say . When it was parents evening that how I new I try to get a statement took me to year 6 to get him a ehcp .

He asd ADHD epilepsy learning difficulties age 6 heart disease lung defect where his lung deflated, hearing loss wear aids , sleep no more then 2 hours he at a specialist school transport to and from school as he can't go anywhere with out a adult .

He shield in lockdown and me too furlough then I had to take volunteers redundancy even thou I had a term contract the made me it very hard for me to return after 25 years service the just didn't care thou

I Claim carers and got med mobility and low care now

He been really self harming, doesn't sleep I don't sleep as he escaped or try to do stuff he shouldn't cook etc . My house child proof.

I added that he started to seizure again as he not had one for so long then he started again. He run off he so stranger danger .

I have applied for a blue badge and he got that even though not on high mobility but he a risk to people especially on road . I've been knocked by cars before today .he 5 ft 6 and I'm only 4 ft 9 so it hard work .

I was told by DLA the now put me on low care only and no mobility I'm so confused 🤔.

So now I won't get carers for him as he need to be on med mobility.

I am going to appeal I've got letter from

Pediatrician

Old family support

School

Carers Leeds help me do the form.

I want to work but I've try that as I need to do term time . why I did term time for my old company.

As he can't be alone in school hols and the no child minder that take him .

When I've been for jobs I get no term time

Or you have to work weekends or later then that I can only work till 3.45 as he get home for 4.30 some time 4.20 but it have to be local or walking distance to get home in time.

I'm really down I really feeling trapped

Hi Daniella

I'm Catherine, one of the Parent Supporters here at Netmums. Thank you for reaching out. It sounds like you have a lot going on for you and your son and I notice that you've mentioned that it has been making you feel like 'I'm really down I really feeling trapped'. Sending you a big hug tonight. Have you been able to chat to anyone about how you are feeling Daniella? Often when we are caring for others, our needs can fall to the bottom of the pile. Could you contact your GP to have a chat about your mood?

Daniella, the DLA process hasn't been straightforward by the sounds of things but it seems like you have been able to get support to challenge it from some professionals. Could you mention to any of them that he has been self harming and you are worried about potential risks when out and about? I wonder if you have ever had a Carers assessment to see what supports are available to you? There is more information about Carer's assessments here on the NHS website: Carer's assessments - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

I'm sure the worries you have shared will resonate with lots of our Netmums' community who are also caring for children with SEN and additional needs. Hopefully the community will be along soon to offer support and advice but in the meantime, please come back to us to chat some more.

Take care

Catherine
