Raising two autistic children one boy 4yrs old verbal and one girl 2yrs old verbal but can’t understand a lot of what she is trying to say. They both fight like cats and dogs with each other always ending in tears for one sometimes both. They kick, hit and bite and run around screaming. I try to redirect endlessly to stop the negative behaviour but it doesn’t seem to be working. I’m ready to throw in the towel and run far away. My head is about to explode from it all.

Hi Erin,

I'm Catherine, one of the Parent Supporters here at Netmums. Thank you for reaching out. I can hear how tough you're finding it so sending you gentle hug tonight.

Erin, it sounds like you have your hands very full - have you any one else to help you or give you a break? Parenting a child with Autism can be really challenging and you sound like you are trying so hard to redirect and manage behaviours but you also sound like you feel disheartened and exhausted. Is that right?

I wonder if you have heard of an excellent organisation called Homestart? They work alongside families to help when things are feeling a bit tough and are there to support you as mummy. I'll link it here in case you would like more information: Home-Start UK

Have you ever linked in with National Autistic Society? They have lots of really good resources on their website - Help and support (autism.org.uk)

Erin, it's also really important that your well-being doesn't get lost in the busyness of taking care of the kids. Could you have a chat to your GP or your health visitor about how you are feeling? Particularly if it's starting to affect your mood or how much you enjoy being a mum.

Hopefully some of our lovely community will be along soon to offer support but in the meantime, please come back to us if you want to chat some more.

Catherine

Thank you Catherine.

I’m beyond exhausted lol. Sadly here in Canada out in Alberta we are on an agonizing long wait list like a lot of families for supports. We have to fill out applications for a main source support to access all the avenues for help unfortunately. Some families have been waiting over a year before their applications were processed as for me it’s been 6 months so far and still waiting for them to process them. I don’t have anyone that I can rely on for help to get a break here and there. Since the waiting for supports I’m with them 24/7 temporarily on stress leave because I can’t get daycare unless we have one on supports for the kids everything is on hold unfortunately with no temporary help until the applications are processed.
