Hi Jade,

I’m Kayleigh, one of the parent supporters at Netmums. I hear this has been scary and you’re worried. Try to give yourself a moment to take a breath.

I understand your concern, although it is recommended not to give a baby under 12 months honey, the associated risks are rare. Your little boy has only had a small amount of honey on one occasion as well, which makes this risk even smaller.

There are signs you can look out for over the next few days in case your little boy does have a reaction such as: a weak cry, drooping eyelids and loss of head control. There is a more extensive list here: https://mominformed.com/accidentally-gave-your-baby-honey-what-should-you-do/

If you notice any of these signs, it could mean your son is having a reaction to the honey and he would need urgent treatment from A&E or calling 999.

You can also call 111 for further advice from a medical professional if you’re still feeling unsure, sometimes we need that extra reassurance.

Take care,

Kayleigh

When I first read this my automatic reaction was "well what's the problem as honey can be good for us" BUT I had to Google it before I replied and I'm glad I did or I would have looked like an idiot 🤦‍♀️ I have a 10 year old and even I didn't know honey can OCCASSIONALLY contain a harmful bacteria for a child under 1 as it was NEVER mentioned to me before or after I had my DS by any health professional so no, not everyone knows that it CAN be harmful but that doesn't mean it will be. Just tell grandad not to do it again and explain why you shouldn't give honey to under 1s, keep an eye on any potential symptoms and leave it at a lesson learned. It might help if you make a list of all harmful foods for young children and give it to him or anyone who babysits. He's from an older generation so all this research wouldn't have been out and available when he was growing up so how is he going to know unless he's told or he's for some unknown reason googled it? 1978 it was apparently discovered. I was born in 85 and I've just asked my mum and she didn't even get told it can be harmful 🤷‍♀️ not your dad's fault.

Aw he's not too far off turning 1 so don't panic! He'll be fine. Just keep an eye on him or call 111 to get some advice on what to look out for.

I'm guessing your babies fine, showing no allergies illness?

In that case do nothing, chill.

Same as when your baby first trys anything....peanuts, seafood etc..... you just monitor them.

Actually it seems a lot of people don't seem to realise you don't give babies honey and even if they know they think its to do with allergies.

The risk is because of the risk of botulism but this risk is incredibly small but if you're worried give 111 a call and they can tell you what to look out for and if you need to do anything.

Why are you listening to this kind of *****? Shop bought honey is pasteurised. Raw honey is so sugar rich bacteria would struggle to survive. Your kid is more likely to drop dead of some random germ they pick up than honey. Have you ever actually heard of anyone getting ill or dying of it? How the hell do you think people evolved if they avoided all the stuff now listed as bad for babies, bad for pregnancy, bad for you, etc

Grow up and start using your own brain. And apologise to your dad!!!!!

Oh come on, no need for that response at all...you've just taken time out of your day to basically yell at someone on netmums for being worried about their child.
