Last modified on Tuesday 14 March 2023

Christmas is well and truly on its way! To help you and your children celebrate the most wonderful time of the year we’ve rounded up some of our favourite Christmas poems for kids. There’s one for each day in the run-up to Christmas, so you could read one of them aloud together daily as you get ready for the big day.

From an excerpt from Dr Seuss’ wonderfully imaginative The Grinch, to the absolute classic poem that helped create our modern image of Santa, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas , there's something for kids of all ages.

If you’re feeling creative, you could write or print these out for your Christmas cards this year, or turn a poetry recital into a fun family activity . Have a look at some of our suggestions below the poems!

How to help your kids enjoy these Christmas poems

There are plenty of creative ways for you to use these poems as a starting point for more festive fun!

Here are a few to get you started:

  • Make handmade Christmas cards with one of the poems written inside
  • Read one of the poems together with your kids each night, or all of them on Christmas Eve
  • Let your friends and family know that you're thinking of them by sending them a Christmas poem
  • Write them down as nicely as you can, and draw festive illustrations on the rest of the page, for handmade and heartfelt gifts
  • Use them as inspiration to write your own Christmas poems together, or stories based on the poems
  • Turn the poems into a small family Christmas play. If you have more than one child, you could split up into teams to see who can make the best play from the poem they choose.
  • If you or your little ones have a love for music, you could try creating your very own carols by turning the poems into songs
