Mum starts petition to BAN party bags with hilarious rant

Last modified on Monday 6 March 2023

Does anything divide parents quite like the bags of plastic tat and sugary treats our kids return home from birthday celebrations with?!

Let's be fair, unless you are Carole Middleton, party bags are rarely a stress-free, pleasurable package of delight, right?

Whether you are assembling them for your own chilld's party, and counting the contents down to the last penny chew for fear Freddie should note Eva has one more sweet than him, or dealing with the ones your kids leave celebrations clutching, they are ALWAYS a pain.

So we don't actually blame this mum for making a stand and starting a petition to BAN the bloomin' things once and for all.

'Please support this important cause'

Ana Balich, who is a mum of 3, shared her heartfelt plea on her not_thenanny Instagram account, imploring other parents to 'please support this important cause'!

'Who is pro giving kids a bagful of junk?' she asked, admitting that she definitely didn't want to spend money on that sort of thing, and had given up on party bags for her own kids.

'The junk comes home, they fight over it, they wedge it between couch cushions .... they put inside the vent ... you step on it in the middle in the night ...' she explained (like we need telling, right?!)

'I've stopped doing it, but I need other people to stop doing it, too,' she said, urging other parents to put a permanent end to the hells that is party goody bags.

'We are not going to judge'

Ana went on to say she didn't understand WHY party bags and class treats were even still a thing, before saying the only thing she could think of was that parents feared being judged if they didn't provide them.

'We are not going to judge, okay!' she insisted, adding: 'We are going to admire your willingness to buck this stupid tradition!'

But what about the kids?

Preempting any comments about children potentially missing out, Ana explained that they really do not need a going home present when they have been partying.

'The kids are fine!

'The kids have just spent two hours at a birthday party running around screaming at the top of their lungs and consuming sugar! 'They don't need to top it off with a plastic spider or little stamp - they're good!'

What do other parents think?

Well, lots of Ana's Insta followers were totally in agreement with her.

'Yes!' wrote one, 'just had a major sibling fights over a f-ing bouncy ball!'

'THIS!!!!!' typed another. 'My daughter's bday party is this Sunday and my mom asked me if I was making goodie bags. I said NO.'

'You had fun at the party didn't you?' said a third. 'That's your gift!'

However, some parents seemed to love the whole party bag ritual, and commented to say that would not be giving it up any time soon.

'Wow I disagree so much,' commented one. 'Let them have the joy of it.'

'Meh. I had a horrible childhood and goodie bags are heaven to me,' said another, adding: 'I'm sending you all the bags full of candy AND junk toys.'

'Can't stop, won't stop,' chipped in another party bag fan. 'The kids always love it, including my own'.'

Well! What do you think? Do you agree? Have you banned party bags already? Let us know!
